Several warning signs often occur before a root canal is needed. David J. Wadas, DDS, your Portage, MI dentist shares a few signs that you may benefit from this tooth-saving procedure.root canal

Pain

Pain may be constant or may come or go. As your condition worsens, the pain may also get worse. The tooth may hurt more when you press on it or bite into foods.

Tooth sensitivity

If hot and cold foods and beverages irritate your tooth, it's time for a visit to the dentist. Sensitivity can be a sign that a nerve in the pulp, in the center, of your tooth is dying. Sensitivity may linger even after you finish a cup of coffee or eat a bowl of ice cream.

Changes in your gums

Change can also occur in the gum around a problem tooth. You may notice that the gum is red and swollen.

Abscess symptoms

Abscess symptoms indicate the presence of a serious infection in your pulp and shouldn't be ignored. Signs of an abscess include:

  • Severe pain
  • Facial or jaw swelling
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum next to the tooth

In addition to performing a root canal, your Portage dentist will also prescribe antibiotics if you have an abscess.

How is a root canal performed?

Contrary to what you may have heard, root canals don't have to be painful. You'll be given enough local anesthetic to keep you comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.

After you're numb, your dentist will create an opening in the tooth. He'll remove the pulp, and clean and shape the canals that extend from the top to the bottom of the tooth with a tiny file. Small posts may be added to the tooth to support the crown that you'll receive at the conclusion of treatment. You'll receive a temporary filling at the end of the appointment and will return in about a week to receive your permanent filling.

Root canals help prevent tooth loss. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, call David J. Wadas, DDS, your Portage, MI, dentist at (269) 323-1802 to schedule an appointment.
